Origin and Purpose:
In India, even though people believe in the concept of inborn talent, they often come across the gharanas, the gurukuls and the kalakshetras, where consistently dancers, musicians and other artists under go rigorous training for years. The contemporary cinema world is exploring and experimenting in creating cinema magic and glamour.

Within a short span of 75 to 80 years, cinema has gone into the subconscious of people and over powered them as tsunami. It is a huge industry which employs crores of people, invests crores of rupees and ends up earning billions of rupees. Around 1960’s i.e. after 30 years of the advent of cinema in India, government of India felt that this cinema industry needs proper academics and creative artists and technicians.
Therefore the government of India established film and TV institute of India and the ministry of information and broadcasting. Almost in the same year, the Madras state government established film and TV institute of Tamilnadu. During these 49 years, FTII produced Jaya Bhaduri, Navin Nischal, Satrughan Sinha, Nipun Goswami, Kalyan Chakravarty, Subhash Ghai, Jalal Aga, Devadas Kanakala, Nasheeruddin Shaw, Om Puri etc. All these acting talents were groomed by Roshan Taneja, then the professor in acting. This fresh talent from Pune swept the old guard. Some of the extraordinary and brilliant photographers like Kamalakar, Balu Mahendra, Kabeer, Prem Sagar etc are also alumni of FTII, Pune.

South India Film Industry reraised the need for grooming the young talent. Hence in January 1973, the South India Film chamber of commerce institute of acting started functioning with Raja Ramdas as its principal, Devadas Kanakala, Prabhakaran Anniyari and Lakshmi Devi Kanakala as assistant professor. The products of this institute are Rajanikanth, Rajendraprasad, Sudhakar, Nazar, Narayan Rao, Hema Choudhary, Bhanuchander, Chiranjeevi etc.
Sri M.G.Rama Chandran after attaining power assumed that the government institution is not producing any creative artists where as South Indian film chamber of commerce is producing super stars. He felt that the need of appointing the staff of South Indian film chamber of commerce (SIFCC) institute of acting, Prof. Lakshmi Devi and Asst. Prof. Mulla. Hence the SIFCC institute of acting was closed and Smt. Lakshmi Devi was appointed as Asst. Prof. and Mulla as instructor of government institution.
